Folio:
1 A payment (lit., “service”) to the Dīwān: 20 sheep, 2 sheep per village.
2 [+ 3] an advance [+ 1] diwan, one sheep; what remains [is for] the rāʾīs’ expenses.
3                                      The petitioner

5 Praise be to God forever.
6 [May] the life [be long] of the beneficent lord, the illustrious, great, God-assisted, victorious, triumphant amīr and isfahsālār,
7 the learned and just Najm al-Dawla wal-Dīn,
8 the lion of Islam and of the Muslims, the glory of kings and sultans,
9 the champion of the mountains, may his good fortune last. He should kindly read this letter of service
10 from his lowest of low [servants]. It should be known to
11 him that the lord’s personal horses
12 have been left in the care of this lowly one for ten days without a mann of barley or hay given [to feed them].
13 They (i.e, the peasants) met three times, then sent someone [who said],
14 “Send the horses back [to the lord]!” We informed the shiḥna Zangī,
15 who said, “I don’t deal with horses,” and he left [them] unattended.
16 This lowly one could not safeguard them any longer [in that village], and we transferred them to the village of this lowly one.
17 For ten days, we provided [them] with our own hay and barley [and then] we sent them to the village of Darṭakh,
18-19 with much effort. If the lord could kindly issue an order, either that they (i.e., the people of Darṭakh) look after the horses, or that we send them back [to him].
20-21 This lowly one has cut no corners, [but] the people [in his village] say, “We can’t provide a single mann of hay or barley.” And they will no longer in the present
22 circumstances.
1 Could the lord kindly instruct the shiḥna to attend to the horses?
2 If they do not feed [them] hay or barley,
3-4 the horses will die. May [you] live in comfort for a thousand years.
5-6 This lowly one has exhausted all options and tricks to have the horses fed with barley or hay.
